6 TABLE 1. Infant mortality in Northeast Florida continues to be a major health issue affecting families. Last October, Florida Blue, Baptist Health and UF Health Jacksonville announced they would finance a $50,000 study into Northeast Florida's stubborn infant mortality rate. The reporting time frame used for the Weekly Morbidity Statistics Report is a based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) weeks. The proximity of these two rates may imply progress with regard to infant mortality in Florida. The infant mortality rate is the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. The Maternal and Child Health Section’s Infant Mortality website contains various publications that provide goals and objectives, guidelines, and data pertaining to activities that improve the health of mothers and babies in Florida. The state had a maternal death rate of 28.1 per 100,000 live births from 2013 to 2017, according to federal data released by America’s Health Rankings. Florida had an overall infant mortality rate of 6.97 per 1,000 live births during 2000. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2016, the infant mortality rate in the United States was 5.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, which calculates to over 23,000 infant deaths. The Healthy People 2000 infant mortality target was 7 per 1,000. The infant mortality rate declined by 50% and the maternal mortality rate fell around 1.6 points per 100,000 pregnancies. Florida ranks 32nd out of the 50 U.S. states in terms of the highest maternal mortality rates.
